You will learn about the important leaders in your community, including political officials, educators, and business owners who help everyone every day.

Who Are Community Leaders?

Your community has many leaders who help everyone. You can learn about Community Helpers who make your neighborhood a great place to live. Leaders work hard every day to help you and your family!

There are three big groups of community leaders. You will learn about political officials, educators, and business owners. Each one has a special job!

Political Officials: Leaders Who Make Rules

A mayor is a political leader who leads a town or city. The mayor makes rules and decisions to keep your community safe and happy. Grown-ups in the community vote to choose the mayor.

The mayor works at city hall. City hall is the building where leaders meet to make decisions for everyone. A city councillor helps the mayor make good choices for the city too.

A premier leads a whole province. The Prime Minister leads all of Canada. A school trustee makes rules for schools in your area. You can learn more about Functions and Services of Local Government as you grow.

Educators: Leaders Who Help You Learn

A teacher is an educator who helps you learn to read, write, and understand new things. Teachers work at school every day just for you! Your teacher is one of the most important leaders in your life.

A principal is the leader of your school. The principal makes sure your school runs well and everyone is safe. The principal also makes the rules that keep students and staff happy. You will learn more about Roles of Community Workers soon!

Business Owners: Leaders Who Run Shops

A business owner runs a shop or service in your community. Business owners sell goods or help people in your neighborhood. A baker is a business owner who makes and sells bread and muffins. A store owner sells things to people in the community.

Other Community Helpers

Your community also has many other helpers. A police officer keeps people safe. A firefighter puts out fires. A doctor helps sick people feel better. A nurse helps the doctor care for sick people.

A librarian helps you find books. A bus driver takes you to school safely. A crossing guard helps you cross the road. A mail carrier brings letters to your home. A garbage collector picks up trash. A chef cooks meals at a restaurant. A plumber fixes water pipes. A farmer grows food on a farm. A coach teaches you how to play sports. A dentist checks and cleans your teeth.

Fun Ways to Learn About Community Leaders

You can draw a picture of your favorite community leader! Think about what job they do and how they help your neighborhood. You can also talk to a grown-up about the leaders in your community.

Look around your neighborhood and see if you can spot Community Places where leaders work, like city hall, your school, or a local shop!
