What Are Roles in Different Settings?
Every person in your community has a special role. A role is the job or responsibility a person has in a place. You can find community helpers in many different settings, like schools, hospitals, libraries, and fire halls.

Community Helpers at School
Your school has many helpers with different roles. The principal leads the school and keeps everyone safe. The teacher helps you learn new things like reading and math every day. The custodian keeps the school clean and safe for you. The school secretary answers phones and helps run the office. The bus driver drives you safely to and from school. The cafeteria worker prepares and serves healthy meals for you. The crossing guard helps you cross the street safely near school.
Community Helpers at Hospitals and Clinics
When you feel sick, community helpers at hospitals and clinics take care of you. A doctor examines patients and helps sick people get better. A nurse cares for patients and gives medicine as directed by doctors. A pharmacist prepares medicines and tells patients how to take them safely. You can find helpers at shops and special community spaces too. A librarian works at the library and helps you find and borrow books for free. A baker makes and sells fresh bread and baked goods at a bakery. A chef prepares and cooks delicious meals at a restaurant. A grocery store worker helps you find and purchase food and supplies. A lifeguard watches swimmers and keeps them safe at a pool or beach. A recreation leader organises fun activities and sports programs at a community centre. A social worker helps families and children who need extra support. A city councillor makes decisions to help the local community. In Indigenous communities, an Elder shares traditional knowledge and cultural teachings with younger people.
