You will learn how to be a good member of a group by sharing, listening, and helping others in your community.

What Is Group Participation?

You are part of many groups every day! Your class is a group. Your family is a group. A group is people who work or play together.

When you join a group, you help make it a great place for everyone. You can learn about Types of Communities to see all the groups you belong to.

How You Can Be a Good Group Member

Good group members share, listen, and take turns. When you share, you let others use things too. When you listen, you pay attention to what someone says.

Taking turns means everyone gets a chance. You wait for your turn so it is fair for all. This shows Respect for Others in your group.

You can also help by using kind words. Kind words make everyone feel welcome and happy. A good group member treats others the way they want to be treated.

Why Groups Are Important

Groups help you do big things together! When your class plants a garden or makes a mural, everyone helps. That is called working as a team.

You can also help your group by following Community Rules. Rules keep everyone safe and make things fair. When everyone follows the rules, the group works well together.

Your group uses Shared Resources like books, crayons, and playground equipment. Taking care of these things helps everyone in your group.

Key Terms and Definitions

Share: When you share, you give some to others or let others use something too. For example, you share crayons so everyone can color.

Listen: When you listen, you pay close attention to what someone else is saying. You look at them and think about their words.

Helper: A helper is someone who does good things for the people around them. You can be a helper by picking up litter or holding the door.

Team: A team is a group of people working together toward the same goal. Your class is a team when you work on a project together.

Community: A community is a group of people who share a place or interest and help each other. Your classroom is a community!

Belonging: Belonging means feeling welcomed, valued, and accepted by your group. Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.

Contribute: To contribute means to do something helpful that makes the whole group better. You contribute when you help clean up after art time.

Neighbourhood: A neighbourhood is the area where people live close to each other. Your neighbours are part of your community.

Leader: A leader is a person who helps guide a group and helps everyone make decisions together.

Ways You Can Participate in Your Group

You can raise your hand and wait to be called on during class. This shows you respect your teacher and classmates. It gives everyone a fair chance to speak.

If a friend feels left out, you can invite them to join your group. This is a kind thing to do! You can also use Expressing Ideas to share your thoughts with your group.

When your group disagrees, you can talk calmly and listen to everyone. This helps your group find a solution that works for all. You will learn more about this when you study Finding Solutions.
