Discover the Community Helpers Who Keep You Safe Every Day!

You will learn about public services, utilities, and emergency responders like police officers, firefighters, and paramedics who keep your community safe every day.

What Are Public Services?

A public service is help that is given to everyone in your community. Police officers, firefighters, and paramedics are all public service workers. You can also learn about Essential Community Services to see how these helpers work together.

Public service workers have special jobs that keep you safe every day. They wear uniforms so you can recognize them quickly. You already know about Community Helpers who do important jobs in your neighbourhood.

Emergency Responders in Your Community

Firefighters put out fires and rescue people in danger. They work and sleep at a fire hall so they are always ready. Fire trucks carry water and big hoses to fight fires.

Police officers patrol your neighbourhood and keep people safe. They work at a police station and wear blue uniforms and a badge. Police officers also help lost children find their way home.

Paramedics help sick or hurt people and drive an ambulance to reach them fast. They give medical care on the way to the hospital. Paramedics are an important part of Basic Government Functions in your community.

Calling for Help - 9-1-1

In Canada, you call 9-1-1 when there is an emergency. An emergency is a dangerous situation where someone needs help right away. Police officers, firefighters, and paramedics all answer emergency calls.

You should always tell a trusted adult if you feel unsafe. Learning about Laws and Safety helps you know what to do in an emergency.

Utilities - Water and Power

A utility is a service like water or power that your home needs every day. Utility workers fix water pipes and power lines so your home has clean water and electricity. Water treatment plants clean water so it is safe for you to drink.

Electrical workers keep power lines working so your lights and appliances run. Garbage collectors pick up trash to keep your neighbourhood clean. You can explore Water and Sewage Treatment Infrastructure Impact to learn even more about clean water.
