What Is Water and Sewage Treatment?

Every day, you use water to drink, cook, and wash. But do you know where that clean water comes from? It comes from a water treatment plant a place that cleans dirty water so it is safe for you to use.

After you use water, it goes down your drain. That used water is called sewage. It travels through underground pipes to a sewage treatment plant where it gets cleaned before going back into nature. This is part of your community's Essential Community Services.

How Does Clean Water Get to Your Home?

Underground pipes carry clean water from treatment plants to your home. These pipes run under streets and sidewalks. You cannot see them, but they work every day to bring you safe water.

At the treatment plant, workers use filters to remove dirt from water. They also add a tiny, safe amount of chlorine to kill germs. This makes the water safe meaning it will not hurt you.

Why Is Sewage Treatment Important?

When dirty water is not cleaned, it can harm fish and water animals. Untreated sewage pollutes rivers and lakes, making them unsafe for aquatic life the animals and plants that live in water.
