Reading and Writing is the first PSAT section
What Is PSAT Reading and Writing?
Reading and Writing is the first section of the PSAT/NMSQT. It has 54 questions in two 32-minute modules. Every question sits on its own short passage, sometimes with a table or graph. Nothing is long.
Where PSAT Reading and Writing students get stuck
Words in context trips people who pick the word they know best instead of the one the sentence needs. Command of evidence asks which quotation or data point supports a claim, and the tempting answer is usually true but beside the point. Boundaries is the grammar that matters most here. Where can a sentence end, and what punctuation joins two clauses?
PSAT Reading and Writing on the PSAT/NMSQT
Questions come in a set order. Craft and Structure comes first, then Information and Ideas, then Standard English Conventions, then Expression of Ideas. Craft and Structure is the biggest domain at about 28%. Expression of Ideas is the smallest at about 20%, and most of it is transitions and rhetorical synthesis, where you pick the sentence that uses a set of notes to meet a stated goal.
How practice works here
The diagnostic comes first and tells you which domain to open. Practice questions adjust as you work, and a wrong answer walks through why the right choice fits the passage. When the domains feel steady, the full practice test runs both modules on the test clock, so the pacing is not a surprise.
PSAT Reading and Writing FAQ
We've got answers to some popular questions.
Can I try PSAT Reading and Writing before I subscribe?
Yes. Start the practice test or work a set of words-in-context questions before you pay. Each wrong answer explains why the right choice fits the passage, so you can judge the explanations first.
What does PSAT Reading and Writing actually test?
Four domains. Craft and Structure is about 28% of the section, mostly words in context and text purpose. Information and Ideas and Standard English Conventions are about 26% each, covering evidence, inferences, sentence boundaries and punctuation. Expression of Ideas, mainly transitions and rhetorical synthesis, is the last 20%.
Why is every passage so short?
Because each one carries a single question. You read 25 to 150 words, answer, and move on, so there is no long passage to hold in your head.
How is PSAT Reading and Writing scored?
It is scored 160–760 and makes up half of your 320–1520 total. The 54 questions come in two 32-minute modules. The second module adapts to how you did on the first, so careless misses early on cost you more than finishing slowly.
Are the grammar questions just about commas?
Mostly boundaries. Knowing where a sentence can end, and which punctuation joins two clauses, answers a large share of the Standard English Conventions questions on the test.
How much does it cost, and can I stop?
Plans run by the month, three months or six months, and the prices are on the pricing page. A plan opens the whole practice test and a study plan built from your results. You can cancel whenever your test is done, and the plan ends there.
