Comparing Two Numbers (Greater Than and Less Than)

This kindergarten lesson teaches students how to compare two numbers by counting, matching objects, and using the greater than, less than, and equal to symbols, with clear picture examples and simple practice steps.

What Does It Mean to Compare Two Numbers?

Comparing two numbers means looking at two amounts and deciding which one is bigger, which one is smaller, or if they are the same. In kindergarten, this is one of the very first number skills students learn because it helps them understand what numbers actually mean, not just how to say them in order.

When we compare two numbers, there are only three possible answers: one number is greater than the other, one number is less than the other, or the two numbers are equal. Learning to spot which of these three is true is the whole goal of this lesson.

Comparing by Counting Objects

The easiest way for young learners to compare two numbers is to count objects in two groups and then compare the counts. For example, if one plate has 4 apples and another plate has 7 apples, we count each plate separately and then ask: which count is bigger, 4 or 7?

4 apples 7 apples 4 < 7

Since 4 comes before 7 when we count, 4 is less than 7, and 7 is greater than 4. This connects directly to counting order: any number that comes later while counting is always the greater number.

Comparing by Matching One to One

Another helpful strategy is to line up objects from each group side by side and match them one to one. Whichever group still has objects left over after every pair is matched is the group with more. This method works even before a student is confident counting higher numbers, because they can simply see the leftover objects.

This one-to-one matching idea is closely related to deciding whether there are enough items for a job, which is covered in more detail in Capacity (Are there enough?). Both skills rely on the same matching strategy, just applied to slightly different questions.

The Greater Than, Less Than, and Equal To Symbols

Once students can tell which number is bigger, they can describe the comparison using symbols instead of just words.

  • \( > \) means "is greater than," so \( 7 > 4 \) means 7 is greater than 4.
  • \( < \) means "is less than," so \( 4 < 7 \) means 4 is less than 7.
  • \( = \) means "is equal to," so \( 5 = 5 \) means the two amounts are the same.

A simple trick many students use is to think of the symbol as a hungry mouth: the open side always faces the bigger number, because it "wants to eat" the larger amount.

Worked Example

Compare the number of stars in each group below and write the correct symbol.

3 stars 5 stars ?

Step 1: Count each group. The first group has 3 stars, and the second group has 5 stars.

Step 2: Compare the counts. Since 3 comes before 5 while counting, 3 is the smaller number.

Step 3: Write the comparison. Because 3 is less than 5, we write \( 3 < 5 \). We could also flip the order and say \( 5 > 3 \), since 5 is greater than 3.

Practice Tips for Comparing Two Numbers

Here are a few strategies that help build confidence with this skill:

  • Always count carefully before comparing, since a wrong count leads to a wrong comparison.
  • Use real objects, fingers, or drawings when the numbers are small enough to picture easily.
  • Practice saying comparisons out loud, such as "6 is greater than 2," before writing the symbol.
  • Remember that comparing is closely tied to knowing which number comes first when counting; this same idea also shows up when deciding fewer or more between two groups.
