Compare 2D and 3D Shapes

What does it mean to compare 2D and 3D shapes?

When we compare 2D and 3D shapes, we are looking at two big shape families and asking: is this shape flat, or is it solid? A 2D shape is flat. It only takes up space in two directions, like going side to side and up and down on a piece of paper. A 3D shape is solid. It takes up space in three directions, so it also has depth, which means you can hold it in your hands.

Learning to compare 2D and 3D shapes helps young learners notice shapes all around them, from a flat piece of paper shaped like a square to a round ball that can roll across the floor.

2D shapes are drawings you can make with a pencil and never lift it off the page. Common 2D shapes include the circle, square, triangle, and rectangle. Each one is flat, so it has no thickness at all, only a length and a width.

3D shapes are solid. Besides length and width, they also have depth, so they take up real space. Common 3D shapes include the sphere, cube, cone, and cylinder. Because they are solid, you can pick them up, stack them, or roll them.

Every 3D shape is built from flat 2D shapes on its surface. A cube is made of six flat squares, and a cone has a flat circle at its base. To practice naming these solids, try naming and selecting the 3D shape.

The easiest way to compare 2D and 3D shapes is to ask one simple question: can I pick it up? If a shape is only a picture or a drawing, like a circle on a piece of paper, it is 2D. If a shape is an object you can touch and turn around in your hands, like a ball or a box, it is 3D.

  • A flat piece of paper is 2D, but a stack of paper is 3D because it has thickness.
  • A drawing of a triangle is 2D, but a solid party hat shaped like a cone is 3D.
  • A drawn square is 2D, but a wooden block shaped like a cube is 3D.
