Classify and Sort Objects

This kindergarten lesson teaches students how to classify and sort objects into groups based on shared attributes like shape, color, and size, building the foundation for comparing, counting, and organizing information.

What does it mean to classify and sort?

When we classify and sort, we look at a group of objects, notice something they have in common, and put the ones that match together. That "something in common" could be shape, color, size, or even how an object is used. Sorting is one of the very first math skills young learners practice, because before we can count, compare, or measure, we first need to notice how things are alike and different.

Think about a toy basket filled with blocks, cars, and stuffed animals. If a child pulls out all the toys that are red, they have classified the toys by color. If instead they pull out everything that rolls, they have classified by how the toy moves. There is often more than one correct way to sort the same group of objects, as long as every object in a group truly shares the chosen attribute.

Before sorting anything, it helps to choose one clear rule to sort by. A good rule answers the question, "What do all the objects in this group have in common?" Common rules for young learners include:

  • Shape, such as circles, squares, and triangles
  • Color, such as red, blue, and yellow
  • Size, such as big and small
  • Type, such as animals versus vehicles

Once a rule is chosen, every object gets checked against it one at a time. If an object follows the rule, it goes into that group. If it does not, it belongs somewhere else. Students who want extra practice sorting by shape can look at classify and sort by shape or focus on grouping by hue in classify shapes by color.

Suppose we have six shapes: three circles and three triangles, in mixed colors. Let's sort them by shape.

  1. Look at the first shape. Is it a circle or a triangle?
  2. Place it into the matching group.
  3. Repeat for every remaining shape.
  4. Check that every shape in the circle group is really a circle, and every shape in the triangle group is really a triangle.

Notice that every shape in the left box is round, and every shape in the right box has three straight sides. That check is what makes the sort correct, not just neat.

Sorting is not limited to two groups. A pile of objects can be split into as many groups as there are different values for the chosen attribute. If we sort a basket of shapes by color and there are red, blue, and yellow shapes present, we end up with three groups instead of two. The same logic used for two groups still applies: pick the rule, check each object, and place it in the group where it belongs.

Once students are comfortable sorting into simple groups, they often move on to organizing objects using overlapping circles, which is covered in sort and count shapes into a Venn diagram, a tool used when an object might share more than one attribute at a time.

Sorting builds skills that come up again and again in math. Comparing group sizes after sorting leads directly into counting and comparing numbers. Noticing shared attributes is also the beginning of recognizing patterns and understanding categories, skills used well beyond kindergarten in graphing, data, and geometry. Practicing with everyday objects, like sorting laundry by color or snacks by shape, is a simple way to reinforce the idea at home.
