Master Word Building with Root Words, Prefixes, and Suffixes
You will explore how prefixes, suffixes, and root words work together to create new words and change meanings in exciting ways.
Introduction
You will discover the amazing world of word parts! Root words, prefixes, and suffixes are like building blocks that help you understand what words mean. When you learn how these word parts work together, you can figure out new words and become a better reader.
Understanding decoding words using affixes will help you break apart words into smaller pieces. This skill connects to your knowledge of identifying common root words that you already know.
What Are Root Words, Prefixes, and Suffixes?
A root word is the main part of a word that gives it meaning. You can add word parts to the beginning or end of root words to make new words with different meanings.
A prefix is a word part that you add to the beginning of a root word. When you add a prefix, it changes what the word means. For example, when you add "un-" to "happy," you get "unhappy," which means not happy.
A suffix is a word part that you add to the end of a root word. Suffixes also change the meaning of words. When you add "-ful" to "joy," you get "joyful," which means full of joy.
Common Prefixes You Will Use
The prefix "un-" means "not" or "opposite." You can add it to words like "wrap" to make "unwrap," which means to take the covering off something.
The prefix "re-" means "again" or "back." When you add "re-" to "read," you get "reread," which means to read something again. You might reread your favorite book!
The prefix "pre-" means "before." When you see "preschool," it means school that happens before regular school starts.
Common Suffixes You Will Learn
The suffix "-ing" shows that an action is happening right now. When you add "-ing" to "walk," you get "walking," which means someone is doing that action.
The suffix "-ful" means "full of" something. Adding "-ful" to "color" makes "colorful," which means full of many colors, like a beautiful peacock.
The suffix "-er" helps you compare things. When you add "-er" to "tall," you get "taller." A giraffe is taller than a zebra!
The suffix "-less" means "without." Adding "-less" to "care" makes "careless," which means without care.
