  1. Read the problem twice and underline the total amount and the number given for groups or group size.
  2. Decide whether the problem is asking for the number in each group (sharing) or the number of groups (grouping).
  3. Write a division statement, such as \( 312 \div 4 \), matching the numbers you found.
  4. Solve the division using place-value or long division strategies.
  5. Check whether there is a remainder and decide what it means for the situation.
  6. Write a full sentence answer that matches the question asked.

Worked Example 1: Sharing Equally

Problem: A teacher has 468 crayons to share equally among 6 tables. How many crayons does each table get?

The total is 468 and it is being split into 6 equal groups, so this is a sharing situation. The division statement is \( 468 \div 6 \). Dividing gives \( 468 \div 6 = 78 \). Each table gets 78 crayons.

Worked Example 2: Grouping

Problem: A store has 585 apples and packs them into boxes of 9. How many boxes are needed?

Here you know the total, 585, and the size of each group, 9, and you need to find the number of groups. The division statement is \( 585 \div 9 \), which gives \( 585 \div 9 = 65 \). The store needs 65 boxes.

Worked Example 3: Interpreting a Remainder

Problem: A club has 275 members and wants to seat them at tables of 8. How many full tables can be made, and how many members are left over?
