Naming Numbers Up to 10

Matching a numeral to a group of objects
Naming a number often starts with counting a group of objects first, then matching the total to its numeral and word. For example, if a child counts \(5\) apples, they should be able to say "five" and point to the numeral \(5\).
This same idea works with any group of objects up to \(10\). Counting the group tells you the numeral, and remembering the numeral tells you the word.
Watching out for numbers that look alike
Some numerals are easy to confuse because their shapes are similar or their words sound alike, such as \(6\) and \(9\), or "thirteen" and "thirty" in later grades. At this stage, it helps to say the number word out loud every time you write or point to a numeral, so the sound and the symbol get linked together firmly.
Practicing with a number line up to 10 is a great way to see all ten numerals in order while saying their names, which also supports skills like finding what comes before, between, or after a number.
Simple practice steps
To build confidence naming numbers up to \(10\), try these steps:
1. Point to a numeral and say its name out loud.
2. Count a small group of objects and match the total to its numeral and word.
3. Cover the numeral and try to write it after hearing only the word.
4. Mix up the order of numerals \(1\) through \(10\) and name them randomly, not just in sequence.
