Definition
Characteristics of a solution, such as concentration (how much solute is dissolved) and solubility (how much can dissolve). These properties describe the mixture of a solute dissolved evenly in a solvent, like salt dissolved in water.
Worked examples
A solution of \(10\,\)g\(\) of sugar dissolved in \(100\,\)mL\(\) of water has a concentration of \(10\,\)g\(/100\,\)mL\(\).
Concentration measures how much solute (sugar) is dissolved in a given amount of solvent (water).
At \(20^\circ\)C\(\), the solubility of table salt in water is about \(36\,\)g\(/100\,\)mL\(\).
Solubility is the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a solvent at a given temperature.
Common mistakes
- concentration and solubility mean the same thing → concentration is how much is dissolved; solubility is the maximum that can dissolve A solution can have low concentration even if solubility is high — they measure different things.
- adding more solute always increases concentration → beyond the solubility limit, extra solute settles out instead of dissolving Once saturated, additional solute does not increase concentration — it remains undissolved.
- solution properties are the same for all solvents → solubility and concentration depend on both solute and solvent Salt dissolves well in water but poorly in oil — the solvent matters.
