Scalars and vectors
High School
Definition
Two ways of describing physical quantities. A scalar has only magnitude, such as mass or temperature, while a vector has both magnitude and direction, such as velocity or force. Distinguishing them is essential for analysing motion correctly.
Worked examples
Mass = \(50\,\)kg\(\) (scalar); Weight = \(490\,\)N downward\(\) (vector)
Mass needs only a number and unit, but weight requires direction to be complete.
Speed = \(15\,\)m/s\(\) (scalar); Velocity = \(15\,\)m/s north\(\) (vector)
Speed tells how fast; velocity tells how fast and which way — the direction makes it a vector.
Temperature = \(25^\circ\)C\(\) (scalar); Force = \(10\,\)N east\(\) (vector)
Temperature has no direction, but force must specify the direction it pushes or pulls.
Common mistakes
- Treating velocity as a scalar and ignoring direction → Always include direction when working with velocity Velocity is a vector — two objects with the same speed but different directions have different velocities.
- Calling weight a scalar because it is measured in newtons → Weight is a vector because it has direction (downward) The unit does not determine whether a quantity is a vector; direction does.
- Adding vectors like scalars: \(5\,\)N north\( + 5\,\)N south\( = 10\,\)N\(\) → \(5\,\)N north\( + 5\,\)N south\( = 0\,\)N\(\) Vectors in opposite directions cancel; you must account for direction when adding vectors.
Where you'll use it next
You'll use scalars and vectors in kinematics to analyze motion, in dynamics to solve force problems, and later in electromagnetism and energy when working with fields and momentum.
