Definition

Changes in a substance's form or appearance that do not produce a new substance, such as melting, freezing, cutting, or dissolving. The material's identity stays the same, and many physical changes can be reversed.

Worked examples

Ice melting into water at \(0\,^\circ\)C\(\)
The solid becomes liquid but it's still H₂O — the molecules haven't changed, only their arrangement.
Tearing a sheet of paper into smaller pieces
The paper's size and shape change, but every piece is still paper — no new substance forms.
Salt dissolving in water to make a solution
The salt spreads out between water molecules but remains salt; evaporate the water and you get the salt back.

Common mistakes

  • Burning wood is a physical change because the wood changes formBurning wood is a chemical change — it produces ash, smoke, and gases (new substances) Physical changes don't create new substances; combustion does.
