Definition

The different categories of machines, from simple machines such as levers and pulleys to complex machines that combine several simple machines. Each type changes the size or direction of a force to make work easier.

Worked examples

A lever (simple machine) uses a bar and fulcrum to lift a heavy rock with less force.
The lever changes force size — you push down with small force over a long distance to lift a heavy load a short distance.
A bicycle (complex machine) combines levers (pedals), wheels and axles, and pulleys (chain and gears).
Complex machines link multiple simple machines together to multiply force and change direction efficiently.

Common mistakes

  • A complex machine is harder to use than a simple machine.Complex machines make work easier by combining simple machines in efficient ways. Complex refers to the number of parts, not difficulty of use — they reduce the effort needed.
  • Machines reduce the amount of work you do.Machines change force or direction to make work easier, but the total work stays the same. Work equals force times distance; machines trade one for the other but can't reduce total work due to energy conservation.
