Definition
The natural processes by which landforms, rocks, and other features are created over time, such as volcanic activity, deposition of sediment, and erosion. Understanding them explains how Earth's surface took its present shape.
Worked examples
The Grand Canyon was carved over millions of years as the Colorado River eroded layers of sedimentary rock.
Erosion by flowing water is a formation process that shaped this massive landform.
The Hawaiian Islands formed from repeated volcanic eruptions on the ocean floor, building up layers of cooled lava.
Volcanic activity is a formation process that creates new landforms by depositing molten rock.
River deltas form where sediment carried by rivers is deposited at the mouth, building up new land over time.
Deposition of sediment is a formation process that gradually adds material and creates landforms.
Common mistakes
- All landforms were created instantly during Earth's formation → Formation processes work gradually over thousands to millions of years Most landforms result from slow, continuous processes, not sudden one-time events.
- Only one process forms each landform → Multiple formation processes often work together to shape a single landform For example, mountains can form by tectonic uplift and then be shaped further by erosion and weathering.
