Definition
A ring-shaped hydrocarbon with the formula C₆H₆ that is the simplest aromatic compound. Its carbon atoms share delocalised electrons in a stable ring, giving benzene distinctive chemistry and making it a building block of many compounds.

Benzene's formula shows equal C–C bonds due to delocalised electrons, not alternating single and double bonds.
Methylbenzene (toluene): a benzene ring with one \(\)CH\(_3\) group attached
Many compounds are built by substituting one or more hydrogens on the benzene ring.
Common mistakes
- Drawing benzene with three fixed C=C double bonds alternating around the ring → Drawing a circle inside the hexagon to show delocalised electrons The electrons are shared equally across all six carbons, not locked in fixed double bonds.
- Treating benzene like an alkene that readily undergoes addition reactions → Benzene undergoes substitution reactions to preserve the stable aromatic ring The delocalised electron system is very stable, so benzene resists breaking the ring.
