Definition

The internal makeup of an atom, consisting of a tiny central nucleus of positively charged protons and neutral neutrons, surrounded by negatively charged electrons. The number of protons defines the element, while the arrangement of electrons determines how it bonds and reacts.

Worked examples

Carbon has 6 protons, 6 neutrons, and 6 electrons in its most common form.
The 6 protons define it as carbon; electrons equal protons in a neutral atom.
Chlorine has 17 protons and typically 18 neutrons (mass ≈ 35), with 17 electrons arranged in shells.
Protons set the element identity; neutrons add mass; electrons determine chemical behavior.

Common mistakes

  • The nucleus contains protons and electrons.The nucleus contains protons and neutrons; electrons orbit outside. Electrons are too light and negatively charged to stay in the nucleus—they surround it in shells.
  • Changing the number of neutrons changes the element.Changing neutrons creates an isotope; only changing protons changes the element. The proton count (atomic number) defines the element; neutron count affects mass and stability.
  • All atoms of an element have the same number of neutrons.Atoms of the same element always have the same protons but can have different neutron counts (isotopes). Isotopes are variants of the same element with different neutron numbers, like carbon-12 and carbon-14.
