Definition
A standard venn diagram is drawn by partially overlaping two circles over each other. Each circle represents a set and is used to compare differences and similarities between the two sets. The elements of each set are bounded within the non overlapped portion of the circle. Any common elements of the two sets are bounded within the overlapped portion of the corresponding circles. Venn diagrams can also be drawn with multiple circles used to compare multiple sets.
Worked examples
\(A = \{1, 2, 3, 4\}, \, B = \{3, 4, 5, 6\}\)
Circle A holds 1, 2; overlap holds 3, 4; circle B holds 5, 6.
\(P = \{\)red, blue\(\}, \, Q = \{\)green, yellow\(\}\)
No overlap — the sets share no common elements, so the circles do not intersect.
Common mistakes
- Placing all elements of set A in the overlap region → Only common elements go in the overlap; unique elements stay in the non-overlapped part The overlap is only for elements that belong to both sets.
- Writing the same element twice, once in each circle → Each element appears exactly once, in the overlap if it belongs to both sets Duplicate entries violate the definition of a set.
- Drawing circles that don't overlap when sets have common elements → Circles must overlap to show the intersection of sets with shared elements The overlap region represents the intersection; missing it loses information.
