Definition
Odds is short for "odds against" It is the chances of a event occuring in your favor. The value is calculated from the sum of all desired outcomes divided by the sum of all possible outcomes. An example is, what are the odds of rolling a 2 on a 6 sided die, the odds are 1/6. Higher odds means a greater chance of getting a desired outcome. While lower odds means a small likelyhood of the desired outcome.
Worked examples
\(\)Odds of rolling a 2 on a 6-sided die\( = \frac{1}{6}\)
One desired outcome (rolling a 2) out of six possible outcomes gives odds of 1/6.
\(\)Odds of drawing a heart from a deck\( = \frac{13}{52} = \frac{1}{4}\)
Thirteen hearts out of 52 cards simplifies to 1/4, or 25% chance.
\(\)Odds of flipping heads twice\( = \frac{1}{2} \times \frac{1}{2} = \frac{1}{4}\)
Multiply the odds of independent events to find the combined odds.
Common mistakes
- \(\)Odds\( = \frac{\)desired\(}{\)undesired\(}\) → \(\)Odds\( = \frac{\)desired\(}{\)total possible\(}\) Odds here means probability (favorable/total), not the ratio of favorable to unfavorable outcomes.
- \(\)Higher denominator means better odds\(\) → \(\)Higher numerator or lower denominator means better odds\(\) A fraction like 1/2 is better odds than 1/6 because the denominator is smaller.
- \(\)Odds of \( A \) and \( B = \frac{1}{6} + \frac{1}{6}\) → \(\)Odds of \( A \) and \( B = \frac{1}{6} \times \frac{1}{6}\) For independent events happening together, multiply the odds; don't add them.
