Center of rotation

Definition
A stationary point in which all objects rotate about that point in a circular motion. For example, if an arrow is pointing towards the center of rotation. When rotated about that point, the arrow moves in an arc but remains the same distance throughout the rotation and the direction of the arrow remains pointing at the center of rotation. When the center of rotation is within the figure, the figure would stay in its spot and spin.
Worked examples
\(A(2,3)\) rotated \(90^\circ\) counter-clockwise about \((0,0)\) becomes \(A'(-3,2)\)
The origin is the center; point A traces an arc while staying \(\sqrt{13}\) units from it.
Triangle with center \((5,5)\) inside it rotates \(180^\circ\) — the triangle spins in place
When the center is inside the figure, the shape stays in its spot and turns around that point.
Common mistakes
- The center of rotation moves during the rotation → The center of rotation is stationary — only the object moves around it The center never changes position; it is the fixed anchor point for the rotation.
- Distance from a point to the center changes as it rotates → Every point stays the same distance from the center throughout the rotation Rotation preserves distances — points move in circular arcs of constant radius.
- Any rotation must be \(90^\circ\) or \(180^\circ\) → Rotations can be any angle measure, e.g. \(45^\circ\), \(120^\circ\), \(270^\circ\) The angle of rotation is independent of the center; any degree measure is valid.

You'll use center of rotation when composing transformations in geometry, analyzing symmetry in coordinate graphing, and later in trigonometry studying polar coordinates and circular motion in physics.
