Definition
Also known as rectagular form. The cartesian form is used to indicate a position of a point on a two-dimensional or three-dimensional space. The cartesian coordinates were first used by René Descartes and therefore named after him.
Worked examples
\((3, 5)\)
A point in 2D Cartesian form: 3 units right and 5 units up from the origin.
\((2, -4, 7)\)
A point in 3D Cartesian form: x = 2, y = -4, z = 7 locate it in three-dimensional space.
Common mistakes
- \((5, 3)\) and \((3, 5)\) are the same point → \((5, 3)\) and \((3, 5)\) are different points Order matters: the first number is x (horizontal), the second is y (vertical).
- Writing \((x = 2, y = 3)\) in Cartesian form → \((2, 3)\) Cartesian form is the ordered pair without variable labels.
- Confusing Cartesian \((3, 4)\) with polar \((r, \theta)\) → \((3, 4)\) means horizontal 3, vertical 4, not distance 3 at angle 4 Cartesian uses distances along axes; polar uses distance and angle.
