2nd Grade Math Topics in Washington State

Washington 2nd grade math covers a wide range of skills aligned to the Washington State K-12 Mathematics Standards. Students work through addition and subtraction, number sense, measurement, and introductory data skills. StudyPug breaks every standard into clear video lessons and practice problems your child can use alongside their regular schoolwork.

Addition and Subtraction

2nd graders in Washington learn to fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies, and solve one- and two-step word problems using addition and subtraction within 100. StudyPug walks through every strategy step by step so students understand the why, not just the answer.

Place Value and Number Sense

Students explore three-digit numbers, learning that each digit represents hundreds, tens, and ones. They count within 1000, skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s, and compare three-digit numbers. These foundational skills prepare Washington students for more advanced arithmetic in 3rd grade.

Measurement and Data

Washington 2nd graders measure lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters, estimate lengths, and solve word problems involving measurement. They also tell time to the nearest five minutes and solve money problems with dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. Data skills include drawing picture graphs and bar graphs.

Geometry

Students recognize and draw shapes with specified attributes, partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal squares, and divide circles and rectangles into equal shares. These geometry concepts connect to fractions introduced in later grades.

  • Add and subtract within 100 and 1000
  • Understand place value for three-digit numbers
  • Measure length using standard units
  • Tell time and solve money word problems
  • Read and create picture graphs and bar graphs
  • Recognize and partition geometric shapes
