Foundations of Journalism for Washington High School Students

Foundations of Journalism is a high school course that introduces students to the principles and practices of professional journalism. Washington students learn how to gather information, write news stories, conduct interviews, and understand the ethical responsibilities of working journalists. This course builds on the writing and communication skills developed in earlier English classes and prepares students for advanced journalism, media studies, or communications programs.

What Skills Does Foundations of Journalism Build?

Students in Foundations of Journalism develop a range of skills used in real newsrooms and media organizations. Core areas include:

  • News writing: Learning the inverted pyramid structure, writing leads, and crafting clear, accurate news stories
  • Reporting and research: Gathering facts, verifying sources, and conducting effective interviews
  • Media literacy: Evaluating news sources, identifying bias, and understanding how media shapes public opinion
  • Journalism ethics: Understanding accuracy, fairness, and the responsibilities journalists have to their audience
  • Editing and revision: Reviewing copy for clarity, grammar, and factual accuracy
