2nd Grade Math in Vermont

Vermont 2nd grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills that prepare students for more advanced math in later grades. Topics include adding and subtracting within 1000, understanding place value with hundreds, measuring lengths, telling time to the nearest five minutes, working with money, and recognizing shapes. All of these topics align to the Vermont Mathematics Standards.

Addition and Subtraction

Students in 2nd grade work on fluent addition and subtraction within 20 using mental strategies, and extend those skills to solve one- and two-step word problems within 100. They also learn to add up to four two-digit numbers and use place value strategies to add and subtract within 1000.

Place Value and Number Sense

Understanding three-digit numbers is a key focus in 2nd grade. Students learn that the digits in hundreds, tens, and ones positions each have meaning. They practice counting within 1000, skip-counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s, and reading and writing numbers in expanded form and with number names.

Measurement and Data

2nd graders measure lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They estimate lengths, compare objects, and solve word problems involving measurement. Students also generate data by measuring objects and represent results using picture graphs and bar graphs.

Geometry

Students recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes, partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal squares, and divide circles and rectangles into equal shares — halves, thirds, and fourths.
