Vermont 1st Grade Math: What Students Learn
Vermont 1st grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills that students will build on throughout elementary school. Aligned to Vermont Mathematics Standards, the curriculum moves from basic counting into meaningful addition and subtraction, number sense with two-digit numbers, and early geometry and measurement.
Addition and Subtraction Within 20
A major focus of 1st grade math is developing fluency with addition and subtraction. Students learn to solve word problems, add three whole numbers, and understand the relationship between addition and subtraction. They also explore properties of operations and practice finding unknown values in equations.
- Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems
- Add three whole numbers with sums up to 20
- Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract
- Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem
- Demonstrate fluency for addition and subtraction within 10
Place Value and Two-Digit Numbers
Students learn that two-digit numbers are made up of tens and ones. They count to 120, compare two-digit numbers using >, =, and < symbols, and practice adding within 100. They also learn to mentally find 10 more or 10 less than any two-digit number.
- Count to 120 starting from any number
- Understand tens and ones in two-digit numbers
- Compare two-digit numbers with >, =, and <
- Add within 100 including two-digit and one-digit numbers
- Subtract multiples of 10 from multiples of 10
Measurement, Time, and Data
1st graders begin measuring length, telling time to the hour and half-hour, and organizing data into categories. These skills connect math to everyday life and prepare students for more advanced measurement in later grades.
- Order three objects by length and compare indirectly
- Express length as a whole number of length units
- Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks
- Organize and interpret data with up to three categories
Geometry and Shapes
Students explore two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, learning to identify defining attributes and compose shapes to create new ones. They also begin partitioning circles and rectangles into equal shares.
- Distinguish defining versus non-defining attributes of shapes
- Compose 2D and 3D shapes to create composite shapes
- Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares
