Virginia 2nd Grade Math: What Students Learn

In 2nd grade, Virginia students work through a wide range of math skills that set the foundation for everything ahead. From adding and subtracting within 1000 to understanding place value, measuring lengths, telling time, and working with money, the 2nd grade math curriculum is packed with essential concepts aligned to Virginia's Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL).

Addition and Subtraction

A big focus in 2nd grade is building fluency with addition and subtraction. Students practice adding and subtracting within 20 using mental strategies, solve one- and two-step word problems within 100, and begin working with numbers up to 1000 using place value strategies. They also learn to add up to four two-digit numbers and mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 from any number between 100 and 900.

Place Value and Number Sense

2nd graders learn that three-digit numbers are made up of hundreds, tens, and ones. They read and write numbers to 1000 in numerals, words, and expanded form, and compare three-digit numbers using their understanding of place value. Skip-counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s within 1000 is also introduced at this level.

Measurement and Data

  • Measure objects using appropriate tools and standard units
  • Estimate lengths in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters
  • Compare lengths of two objects using addition and subtraction
  • Represent whole numbers as lengths on a number line
  • Draw and read picture graphs and bar graphs with up to four categories

Time and Money

Students tell and write time to the nearest five minutes using both analog and digital clocks. They also solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies — practical skills that connect math to everyday life.

Geometry

In geometry, 2nd graders recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes, partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal squares, and divide circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares — an early introduction to fractions.
