Virginia 1st Grade Math: Topics and Skills
Virginia's Mathematics Standards of Learning for 1st grade cover a wide range of foundational math skills. Students work on addition and subtraction within 20, learn about two-digit numbers and place value, explore basic measurement and telling time, and begin recognizing and building shapes. StudyPug has a video lesson and practice problems for every one of these topics.
Addition and Subtraction in 1st Grade
First grade math puts a strong focus on addition and subtraction. Virginia 1st graders learn to solve word problems using addition and subtraction within 20, add three whole numbers together, and understand how addition and subtraction relate to each other. They also work toward fluency — meaning fast and accurate recall — for facts within 10.
- Adding and subtracting within 20
- Solving word problems with three addends
- Understanding the equal sign and true/false equations
- Finding unknown numbers in addition and subtraction equations
Place Value and Two-Digit Numbers
Virginia 1st graders learn that two-digit numbers are made of tens and ones. They count to 120, compare two-digit numbers using >, =, and < symbols, and practice adding within 100. They also learn to mentally find 10 more or 10 less than any two-digit number.
Measurement, Time, and Data
Students order objects by length, measure using whole number units, and tell time to the hour and half-hour on both analog and digital clocks. They also organize and interpret data sorted into up to three categories.
Geometry in 1st Grade
First grade geometry introduces defining versus non-defining attributes of shapes, composing 2D and 3D shapes into new shapes, and partitioning circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares.
