Virginia 8th Grade ELA — What Students Learn

In 8th grade English, Virginia students develop skills across four key areas: reading, writing, communication, and research. The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) for 8th grade English set clear expectations for what students should know and be able to do by the end of the year. StudyPug's lessons and practice exercises are built around these standards so students stay aligned with what their teachers are covering in class.

Reading and Literary Analysis

8th grade readers in Virginia work with both literary and informational texts. Students analyze theme, point of view, figurative language, and author's craft in fiction and poetry. For informational texts, they evaluate arguments, identify text structure, and assess the reliability of sources. Strong reading comprehension skills are essential for success on the Virginia SOL Reading assessment administered in Grade 8.

Writing in 8th Grade

Virginia 8th graders write across multiple modes — argument, narrative, and expository. Students learn to develop a clear thesis, support claims with evidence, organize ideas logically, and revise for clarity and style. Grammar and mechanics are woven throughout writing instruction, including correct punctuation, sentence variety, and word choice.

Vocabulary and Language Conventions

Building vocabulary is a key focus in 8th grade ELA. Students use context clues, word roots, and reference tools to determine word meanings. Language conventions — including subject-verb agreement, pronoun usage, and proper punctuation — are practiced through guided exercises aligned to SOL expectations.

  • Literary analysis: theme, character, figurative language, point of view
  • Informational reading: text structure, argument evaluation, source credibility
  • Writing: argument, narrative, and expository compositions
  • Grammar and mechanics: sentence structure, punctuation, word choice
  • Vocabulary: context clues, word roots, academic language
