4th Grade ELA in Virginia
Virginia's 4th grade ELA curriculum follows the Standards of Learning (SOL) set by the Virginia Department of Education. At this grade level, students develop deeper reading skills, write with greater detail and structure, expand their vocabulary, and apply grammar rules in their own writing. StudyPug's lessons and practice problems cover every one of these skills.
Reading Comprehension and Text Evidence
In 4th grade, Virginia students move beyond basic recall and begin identifying main ideas, supporting details, and the author's purpose. They read both fiction and nonfiction texts and learn to cite evidence from what they read. StudyPug breaks these skills into guided practice so students build confidence step by step.
Writing Skills for 4th Graders
Virginia's SOL expects 4th graders to write organized paragraphs and short essays. Students learn how to plan their writing, develop ideas with details, and revise for clarity. StudyPug's practice exercises walk students through each stage of the writing process.
Vocabulary and Word Study
4th graders in Virginia build vocabulary through context clues, root words, and prefixes and suffixes. These strategies help students understand unfamiliar words in both reading and writing tasks. Practice problems on StudyPug reinforce these strategies so students can apply them independently.
Grammar and Language Conventions
Virginia's 4th grade SOL covers parts of speech, sentence structure, punctuation, and capitalization. StudyPug provides clear explanations and practice for each grammar rule students are expected to know by the end of the year.
