Utah 3rd Grade Math Topics

Utah 3rd grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills aligned to the Utah Core Standards Math. Students move from basic arithmetic into multiplication, division, fractions, and geometry — skills they will continue building through middle school.

Multiplication and Division

A major focus of 3rd grade math in Utah is understanding multiplication and division. Students learn to interpret products of whole numbers, use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems, and apply properties of operations as strategies. They also practice fluently multiplying and dividing within 100 and solving two-step word problems using all four operations.

Fractions

Utah 3rd graders are introduced to fractions as numbers. Students learn to understand a fraction 1/b as one part of a whole partitioned into equal parts, represent fractions on a number line, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size. These skills prepare students for more advanced fraction work in 4th and 5th grade.

Measurement and Data

3rd grade math includes telling time to the nearest minute, measuring liquid volumes and masses, drawing scaled picture graphs and bar graphs, and generating measurement data using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. These skills connect math to real-world problems Utah students encounter every day.

Geometry and Area

Students recognize area as an attribute of plane figures, measure areas by counting unit squares, and relate area to multiplication and addition. They also solve problems involving perimeters of polygons and explore how shapes in different categories can share attributes.
