About 2nd Grade Utah math
Utah follows the Utah Core Standards, which organize 2nd grade math into strands covering number sense, operations, measurement, data, and geometry. Students work on place value to 1000, fluent addition and subtraction within 100, measuring lengths in customary and metric units, telling time to five minutes, and partitioning shapes. UT 2nd Grade Math Topics
- Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Solving one- and two-step word problems using addition and subtraction within 100, identifying odd and even numbers, and using arrays to understand repeated addition.
- Number and Operations in Base Ten: Understanding hundreds, tens, and ones; reading and writing numbers to 1000 in standard, word, and expanded form; comparing three-digit numbers; and skip-counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s.
- Addition and Subtraction Strategies: Fluently adding and subtracting within 20 and 100, adding up to four two-digit numbers, working within 1000 using models and drawings, and mentally adding or subtracting 10 or 100.
- Measurement and Data: Measuring lengths using appropriate tools in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters; estimating and comparing lengths; solving word problems involving length; telling time to the nearest five minutes; and working with money involving dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.
- Data: Generating measurement data, drawing picture graphs and bar graphs to represent data sets with up to four categories.
- Geometry: Recognizing and drawing shapes with specified attributes, partitioning rectangles into equal squares, and partitioning circles and rectangles into equal shares.
