5th Grade Math Topics in Texas
Texas 5th grade math covers a wide range of topics aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Students develop fluency with decimals, fractions, and whole number operations while also exploring geometry, measurement, and data representation.
Decimals and Number Sense
Students learn to represent, compare, and order decimals through the thousandths place. They round decimals to the tenths or hundredths and use estimation to solve real-world problems. These skills build directly on 4th grade place value understanding.
Fractions and Operations
5th grade math introduces addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators. Students also multiply whole numbers by fractions and explore division of unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions.
Multiplication and Division
Students multiply three-digit numbers by two-digit numbers with fluency and solve division problems with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors. Multi-step word problems using all four operations are a key focus at this grade level.
Algebraic Reasoning and Patterns
Students generate numerical patterns using rules in the form y = ax or y = x + a and graph them. They distinguish between additive and multiplicative patterns and simplify numeric expressions using parentheses and brackets.
Geometry and Measurement
5th grade geometry covers classifying two-dimensional figures and developing volume formulas for rectangular prisms using V = l × w × h, V = s³, and V = Bh. Students also solve problems involving perimeter, area, and volume.
Data Analysis
Students represent categorical and numerical data using bar graphs, frequency tables, dot plots, stem-and-leaf plots, and scatterplots. They solve one- and two-step problems by interpreting these data displays.
Financial Literacy
Texas TEKS includes financial literacy for 5th graders. Topics include income tax, payroll tax, sales tax, property tax, gross vs. net income, payment methods, budgeting, and keeping financial records.
