Tennessee 1st Grade Science Topics

Tennessee 1st grade science introduces students to foundational concepts across three main areas: life science, earth and space science, and physical science. These topics are carefully aligned to the Tennessee Academic Standards for Science to ensure students are learning exactly what their school expects.

Life Science in 1st Grade

Students explore how living things grow, change, and interact with their environment. Topics include the basic needs of plants and animals, the characteristics that help living things survive, and simple animal behaviors. These concepts build on Kindergarten observations of the natural world.

Earth and Space Science in 1st Grade

1st graders in Tennessee learn about the properties of soil, weather patterns, and seasonal changes. Students begin to understand how the sun provides light and warmth, and how weather affects daily life. This builds a strong foundation for more detailed earth science study in later grades.

Physical Science in 1st Grade

Physical science at this level covers the properties of materials, how objects move, and the basic concept of force. Students observe and describe how pushing or pulling affects the motion of objects, laying the groundwork for physics concepts in higher grades.
