4th Grade Math Topics in South Carolina

South Carolina 4th grade math covers a wide range of topics under the SC College Career Ready Standards. Students develop skills across number operations, fractions, measurement, data, and geometry — all building toward readiness for 5th grade and the SC READY assessment.

Multiplication and Division

4th graders in South Carolina learn to interpret multiplication equations as comparisons and solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison. They multiply up to four-digit numbers by a one-digit number, multiply two two-digit numbers, and find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends. StudyPug video lessons walk through each of these skills step by step.

Place Value and Multi-Digit Whole Numbers

Students learn that a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. They read and write multi-digit whole numbers in base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form, then use place value understanding to round to any place. Fluent addition and subtraction of multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm is also covered.

Fractions and Decimals

A major focus of 4th grade math is fractions. South Carolina students learn to:

  • Explain why fractions are equivalent using visual models
  • Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators
  • Understand fractions as sums of unit fractions
  • Multiply a fraction by a whole number
  • Express fractions with denominator 10 as equivalent fractions with denominator 100
  • Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100
  • Compare two decimals to hundredths

Measurement and Data

Students solve word problems involving distances, time intervals, liquid volumes, masses, and money using all four operations. They apply area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real-world problems and create line plots to display measurement data sets in fractions of a unit.

Geometry and Angles

4th grade geometry introduces points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles — including right, acute, and obtuse angles — as well as perpendicular and parallel lines. Students measure angles using a protractor, sketch angles of specified measures, understand angle measure as additive, and classify two-dimensional figures. Recognizing lines of symmetry is also part of the South Carolina 4th grade curriculum.

Preparing for SC READY Math

The SC READY Math assessment is administered to South Carolina students in grades 3–8. StudyPug covers every 4th grade topic aligned to SC College Career Ready Standards, giving students the practice they need to feel prepared and confident on test day.
