4th Grade ELA in South Carolina

South Carolina 4th grade students are expected to read and understand increasingly complex texts, write clearly for different purposes, and apply grammar and vocabulary skills. All of this is guided by the SC College Career Ready Standards, which shape what teachers cover and what students are tested on through the SC READY ELA assessment.

Reading Comprehension and Literary Analysis

In 4th grade, South Carolina students read both literary and informational texts. They learn to identify main ideas, analyze character and plot, draw inferences, and compare different texts. These skills are central to the SC READY ELA test and build directly on 3rd grade reading foundations.

Writing and Grammar

4th grade writing in South Carolina focuses on organizing ideas clearly, supporting arguments with evidence, and using correct grammar and punctuation. Students practice opinion writing, informational writing, and narrative writing throughout the year. StudyPug breaks each writing skill into guided steps with worked examples.

Vocabulary Development

South Carolina 4th graders expand their academic vocabulary and learn strategies for figuring out unfamiliar words using context clues, prefixes, and suffixes. Strong vocabulary supports both reading comprehension and written expression across all subjects.
