4th Grade ELA in Rhode Island

Rhode Island 4th grade English covers a wide range of literacy skills. Students work on reading comprehension across fiction and nonfiction texts, learn to write organized paragraphs and multi-paragraph pieces, and develop grammar and vocabulary skills. These skills build on what students learned in Grade 3 and prepare them for more advanced reading and writing in Grade 5.

Reading and Writing Skills in Grade 4

In Grade 4, Rhode Island students are expected to identify main ideas and supporting details, understand story structure, compare and contrast texts, and use context clues to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words. Writing skills include drafting opinion, informational, and narrative pieces with clear structure and supporting evidence.

  • Reading comprehension: fiction, nonfiction, and poetry
  • Story elements: character, setting, plot, and theme
  • Informational text: main idea, key details, and text features
  • Writing: opinion, informational, and narrative formats
  • Grammar: parts of speech, punctuation, and sentence structure
  • Vocabulary: context clues, prefixes, suffixes, and root words

RICAS and Grade 4 ELA Preparation

Rhode Island students take the RICAS (Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System) in Grade 4. The ELA portion tests reading comprehension and writing skills. StudyPug's lessons cover the core reading and writing concepts that appear on the RICAS, helping students feel prepared and confident on test day.
