1st Grade ELA in Rhode Island

Rhode Island 1st grade English covers the foundational literacy skills every young learner needs. Students develop phonics knowledge, expand their sight word vocabulary, and begin reading simple texts with understanding. Writing skills also take shape in 1st grade, as students learn to form sentences, use basic punctuation, and express ideas in writing.

Reading and Phonics in 1st Grade

Phonics is a core focus in 1st grade ELA. Students learn letter-sound relationships, blend sounds to decode words, and practice recognizing high-frequency sight words. These skills build reading fluency and help students tackle new texts with confidence.

  • Letter-sound correspondences and phonics patterns
  • Sight word recognition and fluency
  • Reading simple sentences and short passages
  • Answering questions about what they have read

Writing and Language Skills

1st graders in Rhode Island also develop early writing and language skills. They practice writing complete sentences, using capital letters and end punctuation, and spelling common words correctly. These skills lay the groundwork for more complex writing in later grades.

  • Writing simple sentences with correct capitalization and punctuation
  • Spelling high-frequency words and phonetic words
  • Understanding basic grammar, including nouns and verbs
  • Responding to texts through drawing and writing
