Oregon 2nd Grade ELA: What Students Learn

Oregon 2nd grade English Language Arts builds the foundational skills students need for reading, writing, and communication. Following the Oregon English Language Arts Standards, students in 2nd grade work on phonics and word recognition, reading fluency, comprehension strategies, sentence writing, grammar, and vocabulary development.

Reading Skills in 2nd Grade

Oregon 2nd graders develop key reading skills including phonics patterns, sight words, and reading for meaning. Students learn to identify the main idea of a passage, describe characters and settings, and compare information across texts. These skills directly prepare students for the Oregon state ELA assessments that begin in 3rd grade.
