Ohio 4th Grade Science Topics
Ohio 4th grade science is organized around four major areas outlined in the Ohio Learning Standards for Science: physical science, Earth and space science, life science, and science and engineering practices. Students explore how energy moves, how waves carry information, how Earth's surface changes over time, and how living things depend on each other within ecosystems.
Physical Science: Energy and Waves
In 4th grade, Ohio students learn that energy can be transferred from one object to another through sound, light, heat, and electric currents. They investigate how waves — including sound waves and light waves — carry energy and information. These concepts lay the groundwork for more advanced physical science in middle school.
Earth and Space Science: Earth's Surface
Students examine how Earth's surface is shaped by slow processes like erosion and weathering, as well as rapid events like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. They look at patterns in rock formations and learn how maps and data are used to study changes to Earth's landscape over time.
Life Science: Ecosystems
Ohio 4th graders study how plants and animals interact within ecosystems. They learn about food webs, how organisms compete for resources, and how changes to an ecosystem — from drought to human activity — can affect all living things within it.
