3rd Grade Math
11. 3.NBT.A.2
11.2 Adding with Digits Up to 1000

Adding with Digits Up to 1000

Master 3-digit addition and addition with regrouping by lining up hundreds, tens, and ones and carrying correctly, one column at a time.

What You'll Learn

Line up numbers by place value so hundreds, tens, and ones each sit in their own column before adding.
Add the ones column first, then the tens column, then the hundreds column.
Regroup by carrying a 1 to the next column whenever a column total is 10 or greater, such as \( 6 + 8 = 14 \).
Recognize that carrying moves ten of one place value into one of the next higher place value.
Check a 3-digit addition answer using a quick estimate, like rounding \( 356 + 274 \) to \( 400 + 300 = 700 \).
Apply the same column method to any pair of numbers with digits up to 1000.

What You'll Practice

1

Adding two-digit and three-digit numbers without regrouping

2

Adding numbers with regrouping across multiple place values

3

Solving addition problems with numbers up to 1000

Why This Matters

Mastering addition with larger numbers builds your foundation for all future math, from multiplication and division to decimals and algebra. You'll use these skills daily when working with money, measurements, and solving real-world problems.
