Ohio 3rd Grade Math Topics

Ohio's 3rd grade math curriculum covers a wide range of foundational skills that students will build on throughout elementary and middle school. StudyPug breaks each topic into clear, easy-to-follow video lessons aligned to Ohio's Learning Standards Math.

Multiplication and Division

Students learn to interpret products and quotients of whole numbers, use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems, and fluently multiply and divide within 100. Properties of operations — like the commutative and distributive properties — are introduced as strategies to make calculations easier.

Fractions

3rd grade is when fractions are first introduced. Students learn to understand a fraction as a part of a whole, represent fractions on a number line, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size. These skills form the foundation for fraction operations in later grades.

Measurement and Data

Students tell and write time to the nearest minute, measure liquid volumes and masses using standard units, and generate measurement data using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. They also draw scaled picture graphs and bar graphs to represent data sets.

Area and Perimeter

3rd grade introduces area as an attribute of plane figures. Students measure areas by counting unit squares, relate area to multiplication and addition, and solve real-world problems involving the perimeters of polygons.

Geometry

Students recognize that shapes in different categories can share attributes, and they partition shapes into equal parts — expressing each part as a unit fraction of the whole.

Preparing for Ohio State Tests

Ohio administers state math tests starting in Grade 3 as part of the Ohio State Tests program. StudyPug covers every 3rd grade topic in Ohio's Learning Standards Math, so students are prepared for what they'll see on test day. Short video lessons and targeted practice problems make reviewing specific topics fast and straightforward.
