2nd Grade Math Topics in Ohio

Ohio's Learning Standards Math for 2nd grade cover a wide range of skills. Students move from basic addition and subtraction into multi-digit operations, place value up to 1000, and early measurement concepts. StudyPug organizes every topic so students and parents can find exactly what they need.

Addition and Subtraction

Second graders in Ohio practice adding and subtracting within 20 using mental strategies and within 100 using place value. They solve one- and two-step word problems and learn to add up to four two-digit numbers. StudyPug's video lessons walk through each strategy clearly, with worked examples students can replay.

Place Value and Number Sense

Understanding hundreds, tens, and ones is a major focus in 2nd grade. Ohio students learn to read and write numbers to 1000, compare three-digit numbers, and skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s. These place value skills are the foundation for every math course that follows.

Measurement, Data, and Geometry

Ohio's 2nd grade math standard also includes measuring lengths with appropriate tools, estimating in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters, and solving word problems involving lengths. Students also tell time to the nearest five minutes, work with coins and dollar bills, and read and create picture graphs and bar graphs.

  • Measure objects using different units and compare lengths
  • Tell time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes
  • Solve word problems with coins, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar bills
  • Draw and interpret picture graphs and bar graphs with up to four categories
  • Recognize and partition shapes into equal shares
