7th Grade Math Topics in New York
New York's 7th grade math curriculum is built around the NYS Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards. Students work through a wide range of topics that deepen their number sense and introduce foundational algebra and geometry concepts. StudyPug covers every one of these topics with clear video lessons and guided practice.
Ratios and Proportional Relationships
Students learn to compute unit rates involving fractions, recognize proportional relationships, and apply them to solve multi-step ratio and percent problems. These skills show up throughout everyday life and on the New York State Grade 7 math test.
Rational Numbers
7th graders extend their understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to include all rational numbers — positive and negative. They solve real-world problems using all four operations, building the number fluency needed for algebra.
Expressions and Equations
Students apply properties of operations to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients. They construct and solve simple equations and inequalities to represent real-world situations.
Geometry
The geometry strand covers scale drawings, drawing shapes with given conditions, cross-sections of 3D figures, area and circumference of circles, angle relationships, and surface area and volume of 2D and 3D figures.
Statistics and Probability
Students learn how random samples can be used to draw inferences about a population, compare two data distributions, and use measures of center and variability. The probability strand introduces chance events, probability models, and compound events using lists, tables, tree diagrams, and simulation.
Preparing for the New York State Grade 7 Math Test
New York tests math in grades 3 through 8. StudyPug's 7th grade content is fully aligned to the NYS Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards, so every lesson and practice problem your child works through is relevant to what they'll see on their state assessment.
