Addition and Subtraction

2nd graders in New York work on adding and subtracting within 100 and 1000. Topics include solving one- and two-step word problems, fluently adding and subtracting within 20 using mental strategies, and adding up to four two-digit numbers. Students learn that three-digit numbers represent hundreds, tens, and ones. These foundational skills prepare students for 3rd grade math.

Measurement and Data

New York 2nd graders measure lengths using rulers, yardsticks, and meter sticks. They estimate lengths in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters, and use addition and subtraction to solve length word problems. Data topics include creating line plots, picture graphs, and bar graphs to represent and compare information.

Time and Money

Students tell and write time to the nearest five minutes using analog and digital clocks with a.m. and p.m. They also solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies using $ and ¢ symbols.

Geometry

2nd grade geometry covers recognizing and drawing shapes by their attributes — including triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes. Students partition rectangles and circles into equal shares and describe them using words like halves, thirds, and fourths.
