Foundations of Journalism for Nevada High School Students

Foundations of Journalism is a high school English course that teaches students how to find, report, and write accurate news stories. Nevada students in this course develop skills in interviewing, source evaluation, headline writing, and ethical decision-making in the media. These are also core literacy skills reinforced by the Nevada Academic Content Standards for English Language Arts.

Key Skills Covered in This Course

  • News writing and story structure
  • Interviewing and source verification
  • Media literacy and identifying bias
  • Headline and caption writing
  • Journalism ethics and responsible reporting
  • Editing and revision strategies

How This Course Connects to Nevada ELA Standards

Foundations of Journalism builds on the reading and writing skills that Nevada students develop throughout high school. The course reinforces informational writing, argument construction, and evidence-based communication — all areas assessed in the Nevada SBAC ELA exam for 11th graders. Strong journalism skills translate directly into stronger academic writing across all subjects.
