New Mexico follows the New Mexico Standards for mathematics, organized around number operations, fractions, measurement, data, and geometry. In 4th grade, students work on multiplicative comparison, multi-digit addition and subtraction, fraction equivalence and addition, decimal notation, area and perimeter, and angle measurement. - Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Multiplicative comparison, multistep word problems using the four operations, factor pairs for whole numbers up to 100, and number and shape patterns.
- Number and Operations in Base Ten: Place value in multi-digit whole numbers, reading and writing numbers in expanded form, rounding, fluent addition and subtraction, multi-digit multiplication, and division with remainders.
- Number and Operations - Fractions: Fraction equivalence, comparing fractions with unlike numerators and denominators, addition of fractions, multiplying a fraction by a whole number, and decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 and 100.
- Measurement and Data: Relative sizes of measurement units, word problems involving distance, time, volume, mass, and money, area and perimeter of rectangles, and line plots with fractional measurements.
- Geometry: Points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles; classifying two-dimensional figures by parallel or perpendicular lines; measuring and sketching angles with a protractor; and identifying lines of symmetry.
