4th Grade ELA in New Mexico

New Mexico 4th grade English Language Arts follows the New Mexico English Language Arts Standards. Students in 4th grade are expected to read and analyze both fiction and nonfiction texts, write structured opinion and narrative pieces, and apply grammar and language conventions accurately. These skills build directly on 3rd grade literacy foundations and prepare students for more complex work in 5th grade.

Reading and Comprehension Skills

In 4th grade, New Mexico students develop deeper reading comprehension. They learn to identify main ideas and key details, understand how authors use text structure, compare and contrast information across sources, and explain how characters respond to challenges in a story. StudyPug provides guided practice for each of these skills so students can work through them step by step.

Writing Skills in 4th Grade

4th graders in New Mexico practice three main types of writing: opinion writing with supporting reasons, informative writing with organized facts, and narrative writing with descriptive details and clear sequences. StudyPug lessons walk students through each writing type with worked examples and practice exercises.

Grammar and Language Conventions

  • Correct use of relative pronouns and adverbs
  • Progressive verb tenses
  • Correct capitalization and punctuation
  • Spelling patterns and frequently confused words
  • Using context clues to determine word meaning
