About 1st Grade New Jersey science

New Jersey follows the NJSLS-Science, which are adopted from the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), organized around disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. In 1st grade, students explore engineering design, classification of plants and animals, life cycles, survival needs, properties of matter, motion, light and sound, daily patterns, weather, and local ecosystems. StudyPug provides step-by-step lessons and practice problems aligned to every strand in this course.

  • Strands covered: Engineering Design, Life Sciences (Classification, Survival Needs, Life Cycles, Plants, Animals), Physical Sciences (Properties, Changes, Motion, Light and Sound), and Earth Sciences (Daily Patterns, Weather, Natural Resources, Local Ecosystems)
  • Step-by-step lessons and guided practice for every 1st grade science topic
  • Practice problems and worked examples aligned to NJSLS-Science standards
  • STEM Skills, Traditional Knowledge, and challenge activities to extend learning

NJ 1st Grade Science Topics

  • STEM Skills and Engineering Design: introduces the engineering design process and foundational science thinking skills.
  • Life Sciences - Classification, Survival Needs, Life Cycles, Plants, and Animals: covers how living things are sorted, what they need to survive, how they grow and change, and the roles of plants and animals in ecosystems.
  • Physical Sciences - Properties, Changes, Motion, Light, and Sound: explores observable properties of materials, how matter can change, forces and motion, and the behavior of light and sound.
  • Earth Sciences - Daily Patterns, Weather, Natural Resources, and Local Ecosystems: examines patterns in the sky, seasonal weather changes, how natural resources are used, and the living and nonliving parts of local environments.
  • Tools, Traditional Knowledge, Foundation Review, and Challenge Zone: builds scientific inquiry habits, honors indigenous ways of knowing, and extends learning for students ready to go further.

How StudyPug Helps NJ 1st Grade Science Students

When a 1st grader gets stuck on a topic like life cycles or the properties of matter, StudyPug lets them rewatch a lesson as many times as needed and work through practice problems at their own pace. Our grade 1 science help covers every NJSLS-Science topic so no concept is left out.

Students moving on from kindergarten can build on what they already know. If your family wants to see what comes next, the nj grade 2 science curriculum shows the topics waiting ahead.

Aligned to NJ 1st Grade Science Curriculum

Every lesson and practice problem on StudyPug is mapped to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Science, which follow the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) framework. That means when your child works through a StudyPug lesson on engineering design, daily sky patterns, or plant survival, the content directly reflects what their New Jersey classroom is teaching this year.
